Pho20graphy - a 20 year retrospective

Pho20graphy - a 20 year retrospective Image

We're absolutely tickled pink to be hosting Pho20graphy, a 20 year retrospective of photographer Barry McCall's work in our Copper House Gallery next month, from the 15th of May to the 10th of June.

This exhibition has a special resonance for us as Barry started his brilliant career in our studio and there was a delicious irony in our asking him for 'a job' earlier this year. Thankfully, he gave us the gig and we can't wait to show you a set of fabulous images hanging on our walls soon.

Barry has allowed us to edition many of his works and proceeds from the sale of Barry McCall prints, available from our Gallery, will go to the ISPCC, the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

The good news is that Barry will be hosting two artists evenings, the first of which will be 'Barry McCall on Fashion and Celebrity' on Tuesday May 22nd 6.30 - 8.30pm and all are welcome. Barry will give a guided tour of the exhibition and explain the pleasure (and pain) of his practise.

Barry will also host an evening, Barry McCall on Pho20graphy, for practising photographers on May 29th, 6.30 - 8.30pm, where he'll be delighted to discuss his work and engage in a technical Q&A session with his peers. Please RSVP .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to reserve your place.

Just a perfect day

Just a perfect day Image

This morning was just wonderful for us as we came in to be greeted by this review from Kate at LeCool.

To say we got emotional and feel extremely grateful would be a wee understatement...

The Exile’s Return by Kevin McSherry

The Exile’s Return by Kevin McSherry Image

We're gearing up for the opening tomorrow evening of The Exile's Return, an exhibition of paintings and prints by Kevin McSherry. Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan T.D., will open the exhibition here in The Copper House Gallery.

The works in this exhibition deal with the artist's recurrent theme of cultural disconnection. He relates his narrative-laden paintings, sometimes with humour, other times more darkly, but all his works play with the viewers imagination and wit, stretching both, with his intentionally absurd compositions.

The show runs until 14th April. Admission is free and all are welcome. The opening party starts at 6pm. Hope to see you all there!

Fierce Critics - Fine Art Print & Exhibition Design

Fierce Critics - Fine Art Print & Exhibition Design Image

We've been busy making hundreds of these little acrylic models and are delighted that they'll be popping up and being used all over Ireland over the coming months. They're 1:10 scale and we'll be using them with photographers, artist and students to help plan and design their exhibitions and graduate shows. (Think PhotoIreland 2012). The little men and women also star in our exhibition design masterclasses and facilitate perfect visualisation of how your work will look on the wall. Every college student coming into us for their photographic and fine art prints gets a set together with a maquette of their exhibition space. You're more than welcome to a set too whether you're planning a show, making prints or just plain curious. Just call down to us in The Copper House and say hi - the only snag is, we promise to tell you about all we're up to so be warned!

21st-century technology

21st-century technology Image

We were delighted to see a lovely article 'Images that see further' by Ros Drinkwater in this Sunday's Business Post.
Ros's article references our current exhibition, Sean Hillen's 'ReViewed' in our Copper House Gallery, following a discussion  of an exhibition currently showing in Washington DC, 'Snapshot: Painters and Photographery, Bonnard to Vuillard'. She mentions our '21st-century technology' which we've coupled with our decades of fine art printing skills for Sean's show.
Quoting Ros directly she says 'To see how 21st-century technology has energised a modern master, I'd recommend a visit to the Copper House Gallery, which is currently showing ReViewed, an exhibition by Sean Hillen. Radical new scanning technology and skills deployed at the Copper House magnify each surreal detail of Hillen's collages, giving the viewer an insight to his finely crafted microscopic world.
As a ten year-old growing up in Newry, Hillen recalls "trying to imagine living somewhere where there wasn't a constant war, and finding it unimaginable, but knowing that it must exist". Having studied at Belfast College of Art and the Slade in London, he put his experiences to good use with a series of critically acclaimed photomontages based on his own documentary photographs of the Troubles.
His take on the Celtic Tiger, a series entitled Irelantis, was described by Guardian critic Mic Moroney as "hilarious and destabilising . . . souped-up Catholic kitsch colliding with a vivid, comic-book aesthetic".
The exhibition comprises works from his four series: The Troubles, Irelantis, What's Wrong? (collages which combine the 9/11 atrocities, major Irish literary figures and scantily-clad beauties to add up to a devastating indictment of our times) and Searching for Evidence, which includes the prescient 2007 collage No Evidence Of A 757 Near The Ha'Penny Bridge, Dublin?'
A big 'thank you' to Ros for this interesting article and for including Sean and ourselves in it.
'ReViewed runs until March 2nd and we'd love you to call and see the gorgeous photographs, we'll show off the scanner too if you'd like to see it!

‘ReViewed’ by Seán Hillen

‘ReViewed’ by Seán Hillen Image

We've always been ardent admirers of Seán Hillen’s distinctive collage artworks so were delighted when he accepted our offer of a show at The Copper House Gallery.

We revisited his originals, scanning and digitally remastering them using our Cruse Scanner, before producing new art works as liquid acrylic Lambdachromes.

The excitement when we saw the outcome was unreal so we wanted to share a sneak peak of one of the test prints with you. You'll be able to see this re-imagining of Seán's gorgeous work when the show opens on the 8th of February and hope to see you there!

Le Cool Reviews Coal Story

Le Cool Reviews Coal Story Image

Dublin's online arts and cultural event magazine, Le Cool, were in with us during the week to review The Copper House Gallery's newest exhibition, Coal Story by Darek Fortas.

In Le Cool's review, featured online today, their praises are high and it's obvious the exhibition has made a lasting impression. Describing one particular image, they capture the sombre mood and essence of the exhibition. "This purely functional space takes on a haunting weight that's evocative of the years of struggle these men underwent in the Communist era."

Darek was Fire's 2011 Propller winner and his show will run in The Copper House Gallery until February 3rd. So come on down to see the exhibition for yourself! Follow us on facebook and twitter for regular updates and for more info on Propeller 2012!!
